Car Parking
The demand for parking at the University is very high. Car parks are managed using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and foot patrols.
The University aims to:
- Use available spaces effectively and fairly
- Encourage the use of alternative, sustainable travel options
Car Parks
You require a permit to park on campus.
- Llandaff Campus
- WJEC (staff only)
- Cyncoed Campus
- Plas Gwyn Halls
- Alexander House, Excelsior Road
A permit does not guarantee a parking space. At peak times, you may need to allow extra time to find one.
Please do not park in local neighbourhoods. Residential permits and restrictions are in place. Always park legally, responsibly and thoughtfully.
Staff parking is managed through annual permits via salary deduction, or via Pay and Display permits. A parking boundary applies to some car parks.
Permits are valid from 1st October until 30th June each academic year
All students are strongly encouraged to travel by sustainable transport. Permits are limited to essential drivers. The criteria for each campus is updated annually on the MetCentral Student Portal.
Most parking spaces require a permit. Please use your term-time address and provide relevant evidence. Permits are issued based on individual need and space availability.
Eligible categories include (criterion vary per campus):
- Limited Mobility: Blue Badge holders, students who qualify for PIP Mobility, or those receiving other mobility-related benefits.
- Elite Sport Activities: Requires supporting information or academic confirmation.
- Lack of Sustainable Transport Options: Use Traveline Cymru to plan your journey; apply using your term-time address.
- Caring Responsibilities: For dependants who are disabled, elderly, or ill. Evidence may include attendance allowance or official carer status.
- Overnight Parking: Halls students may park only if allocated a permit. Criteria are limited to Elite Sports and Limited Mobility.
Please use your student email account to apply. You must be enrolled before applying. Student applications open during August.
Blue Badge holders are exempt from parking charges. Please register your vehicle through the standard permit application process. Vehicles may park in designated accessible bays when displaying a valid Blue Badge.
Temporary Mobility Permits
If you have a temporary injury or mobility impairment, you may be allowed to park in an accessible bay. Temporary permits may be available with prepayment for an agreed time.
You can request a temporary mobility permit by emailing relevant medical evidence to carparkappeals@cardiffmet.ac.uk.
Visitor bays are available and can be prebooked by staff. Please advise visitors of their allocated bay location.
On arrival, visitors should report to reception. Visitors without a booked space must register and pay using the PayByPhone app.
Students are not considered visitors when studying at the University.
Electric Vehicle Charging
EV charging is available on all sites except WJEC. Charging is available to all car park users, subject to terms and conditions. Fast chargers (50kWh) are available at Llandaff and Cyncoed.
EV spaces are for charging only and not general parking. Time restrictions apply.
Clinic Parking
Designated clinic parking is available. Vehicles must be registered at clinic reception and payment made at the appropriate rate.
Conference Delegates
Parking for conferences is arranged via Conference Services.
Contractors
Contractors working on behalf of the University may apply for a permit. Details of permit types and payment options are available on the Cardiff Met Online Store.
University Hire Cars
Hire cars may park in general bays with the relevant hire company hanger on the rear view mirror. Keys should be left at reception. Vehicles may not park in accessible bays. The hirer is responsible for charges resulting from incorrect parking.
Coaches
Coaches may drop off and collect passengers on campus. They must not wait in the bus stop at Cyncoed Campus, which is in constant use. Coach parking is not permitted anywhere on campus.
Tariffs and conditions are displayed in all car parks.
Payment options include Pay & Display machines (card only) or the PayByPhone app (App Store and Google Play).
I've received a Parking Charge Notice (PCN) that I want to appeal
If issued correctly, prompt payment is recommended as payments within 14 days are reduced. Appeals must be submitted to Saba Park. The University cannot access PCN details. If unhappy with the outcome, you may email via Appeal a Decision for review.
My son/daughter/other driver has ignored a PCN and I received a debt letter
Contact the organisation listed on the letter promptly. If you are unhappy with the outcome, you may request a review of the decision by the university via Appeal a Decision.
I want to cancel my permit
Cancellations must be done via the online portal. Monthly deduction users may be unable to rejoin within 12 months.
I am changing my vehicle
Update details at Permit Portal. Changes apply next day; please log the new registration at reception for any interim use.
I will be using a different car for a day
Register the temporary vehicle at campus reception each day. For Alexander House, contact Llandaff reception.
